“What’s Important?”

“What’s Important?!
Well, I need to figure out why I’m here.
God has a plan for everyone, right?
So I just need to search harder until I figure out what God wants me to do.”
Whoa, whoa, whoa!  Hold up! Now let’s think this through
We know that God is above all
So above all we need to remember that
It’s His plan we’re striving for
So we should start by putting God in the center of our lives
Now let’s look at how He says we accomplish that
He says that the greatest Commandment is to love the Lord with all your heart
And love your neighbor as yourself
If we’re to love the Lord with all our heart, that makes Him first
You might say we already covered that
But this command goes deeper than just making God first
All of us goes to Him
He’s no longer just the center of life
He’s the center of our attention
We’re to follow His rules
We’re to live for Him above all else
The second part of the verse tells us what we should keep next in line
We’re to love our neighbor as ourselves
Who’s our neighbor?
Anyone other than us
Since sin has made us all selfish creatures
Loving our neighbor as our self means loving others as much as sin would tell us to love ourselves
We already said that we are to love the Lord with all our heart
So if we love our neighbor as much as we would want to love ourselves
Where does that put us?
Last! Right where we should be
We give all of us to God and all of us to other people
Wait a minute
If all of us goes to God, how can we give all of us to other people?
But that is what’s so great about God
The joy and peace that He gives in return doesn’t end
We give our joy to other people because we can’t hold in the amount of joy He fills us with
Our cup is so full of joy that it overflows onto others
That’s why we need to depend on Christ
We need to be filled with Him
We have to be emptied of ourselves
All we truly need is more of Him
That’s what’s Important
Less of us more of Him
With everything we do we should be thinking “Is this God honoring?”
“Am I helping someone else?”
“Am I hurting someone?”
“Am I doing this for me?”
All these Questions need to be answered
God longs for us to live for Him because when we live for ourselves
We miss out on the greater joy that God wants to give us
These questions need to constantly be in our minds
Especially this one
“What’s important?”

  1. I'm liking the order of the questions that you pose in the last 10 or so lines. Right now I'm trying to find a balance between serving others (God and my neighbors) and doing enough for myself to be faithful to God (i.e. my schoolwork). Right now I'm questioning if I've been unfaithful to what God has for me at this season of life and if I've been using service as a well-meaning cover-up.

  2. Well I'm glad this poem was a help to you. Those questions are a good frame to guide what we do. But it seems too easy to slide a little away from spending time with God and what He wants you to do. I'll be praying for you.
